Jean Sibelius: The Bard op. 64
Matti Rautio: Piano Concerto
Sergei Prokofiev: Symphony no. 4 in C major op. 47
Maurice Ravel: Bolero
In a programme of gems selected by Olli Mustonen, the enigmatic tone poem The Bard relates an ancient Scandinavian ballad, according to Sibelius himself. This year marks the centenary of the birth of Matti Rautio, and his nephew Martti Rautio performs his brisk Piano Concerto, completed in the 1970s. He has performed the work before, for instance with the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra. Prokofiev provides a richness of enjoyment for friends of symphonic music, and Ravel’s enduring classic concludes the evening with its hypnotic rhythm.
The concert is a part of the Festival of the Artistic Leadership.
The length of the concert is about 2 h. Intermission.
