Olli Mustonen and a Beethoven piano concerto – it just doesn’t get better than this. Beethoven’s Third Piano Concerto is just as brilliant, fascinating and compelling as one would expect. His expansive Leonore Overture No. 3 is the third overture that he wrote and rejected for his opera that was subsequently renamed Fidelio. Nielsen’s ‘Sinfonia espansiva’ calls for vocal soloists, here the wonderful soprano Johanna Isokoski and baritone Petteri Salomaa. “Beethoven and Nielsen are unique composers, both dear to me – both extremely original masters whose music exudes a human warmth,” says Mustonen.
