Heitor Villa-Lobos: Assobio a jato ('jet whistle') for flute and cello
François Devienne: Quartet in D major for flute and string trio op. 66/2
Sebastian Fagerlund: String Trio ‘Oceano’

Philip Zuckerman, violin
Mari Viluksela, viola
Larimatti Punelpuro, cello

Reger’s lovely Serenade opens this evening at the Sibelius Museum, focusing on chamber music with flute. Villa-Lobos’s piece highlights the differences between the flute and the cello, which nevertheless complement each other’s sound nicely. Devienne is known as the ‘French Mozart’; his Quartet is airy and lucid. Oceano by our Composer-in-Residence Sebastian Fagerlund was commissioned for a concert series in Turku’s year as European Capital of Culture in 2011; back then, the piece was performed along what used to be the mail boat route from Turku via Åland to Stockholm.
