Strong Rachmaninov with pianist Lise de la Salle

In October´s first concert Turku Philharmonic Orchestra will lead the audience to outburst of feelings of post-romanticism. On Thursday the 1st of October at 7 pm works from composers Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy, Sergei Rachmaninov and Edward Elgar will be heard in the Concert Hall. Renowned Sian Edwards is conducting the concert and French Lise de la Salle, the winner of several competitions, will arrive as a soloist.

The concert begins with Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy´s beautiful Hebrides Overture that describes the nature of the Hebrides Isles. Strong and energetic Sergei Rachmaninov´s 1st Piano Concerto will follow before the intermission. Rachmaninov composed the piece when he was 18 years old and later he renewed the piece where both the inventiveness of youth and more mature tones can be heard. After the intermission we will hear Edward Elgar´s Enigma Variations that consists of a theme and 14 variations, each of which describes one member of Elgar´s inner circle.

Conductor Sian Edwards has lead the world´s most significant orchestras such as London Philharmonic Orchestra, Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, The Los Angeles Philharmonic, Orchestre de Paris, Berlin Symphony Orchestra and St. Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra. Edwards also teaches conducting in Guildhall School and gives master classes in Dirigentenforum in Germany and in St. Andrews University in Scotland.

French pianist Lise de la Salle, born in 1988, gave her first concert at the age of nine. From year 2001 her notable international career has consisted of performances in the great concert halls in Europe, USA and Asia. Her recordings are praised by the critics and her record that was released in 2004 was awarded Gramophone´s record of the month. Lise de la Salle has won i.a. first price in Young Concert Artists International Auditions -competition in New York.

Chamber Music Concert leads from King´s road to France

On Saturday the 3rd of October at 3 pm. in the Turku Castle we will travel with Finnish and Swedish tones to France. The concert begins with Aulis Sallinen´s String Quartet no 3 “Aspects of the Funeral March of Hintrikki Peltoniemi”. The popular piece´s name is referring to a well-known folk melody and takes the listener from one mood to another. Anders Hillborg´s Tryffelhymn is combining different elements in its voice and is humorously dedicated to truffle pigs. The concert ends with Gabriel Faure´s strongly emotional Piano Quartet in c-minor that was composed in the middle of a heartbreak. Violinists Juha-Pekka Vikman and Nobu Takizawa, violist Ramona Wolin-Takala, cellist Katja Kolehmainen, flutist Niamh McKenna and pianist Mikael Kemppainen are performing in the chamber music ensemble.
