TPO:s collaboration with Mariinsky Theatre continues with Sibelius programme

Turku Philharmonic Orchestra´s collaboration with St. Petersburg´s Mariinsky Theatre continues. Collaboration began in 2013 and now the orchestra is visiting St. Petersburg third time in a row. Pieces from Jean Sibelius, whose 150th anniversary is celebrated this year, are heard on Thursday 8.10. at 7 pm in the  Concert Hall and the next day Friday 9.10. at 8 pm in St. Petersburg. Chief Conductor Leif Segerstam is conducting the concerts and soloist is world-renowned soprano Camilla Nylund.

The concerts start with Sibelius´ symphonic poem Tapiola. The piece is a homage for forest and a display of Sibelius´ skills to handle an orchestra. Next soprano Camilla Nylund surrenders to the world of Sibelius´ songs. Pieces Luonnotar, Flickan kom ifrån sin älsklings möte and Var det en dröm are evidence of the diversity of Sibelius. Their themes vary from the description of the birth of the world to heartbreak. The concerts end with Sibelius´ highly popular second symphony where grand and dramatic emotions are thundering.

Turku Philharmonic Orchestra´s Chief Conductor Leif Segerstam is one of the most recognized Sibelius interpreters.  Segerstam conducted Sibelius Festival´s opening concert in Lahti year 2015 and he also opened Helsinki Festival 2015. Segerstam was appointed Honorary Conductor for Malmö Opera in September 2015. The Sibelius-recordings led by Segerstam have received recognition the world over. In 7 kukkulaa soi! -music film Segerstam conducts Sibelius´ Finlandia when TPO plays from the seven hills of Turku.

Multiply awarded opera singer Camilla Nylund has received i.a. Lilli Lehmann Medal, the title “Kammarsängerin” (chamber singer) by the state of Saxony and Christel Goltz Award. Nylund has visited the world´s greatest opera houses and performed throughout her career with notable orchestras and conductors. Nylund was awarded Pro Finlandia Medal in 2013.
