“Amidst the richness of colour in the programme of the Turku Philharmonic this coming autumn, I would like to point to a few significant Finnish concertos. We are beginning our eagerly expected collaboration with our com-poser-in-residence Sebastian Fagerlund by performing his Clarinet Concerto, one of his breakthrough works. This fascinating piece was my first introduction to his music, and it thus feels doubly appropriate to programme it at this point in the history of our orchestra.

This spring, we were saddened to hear of the passing of our good friend Jaakko Kuusisto. Over the years, he worked closely with the orchestra as a violinist, a conductor and a composer. His Piano Concerto is one of his finest and most impactful works, and we dedicate its performance here to his memory.

The year 2022 marks the centenary of the birth of Matti Rautio, whose Piano Concerto is the most im-portant work in his output – an instant modern classic. It is like a mysterious tropical bird, a rare guest in our ever-green forests, brought here by warm southerly winds to delight us with its joyous song and the dazzling colours of its plumage.”
