Hits from Bach to Beethoven with Concertmasters
Hop on the rollercoaster of melodies! Concertmasters Matti Koponen and Philip Zuckerman have crafted a multi-layered program that, like a rollercoaster, takes the listener from style to style and from century to century. The program includes hits from Bach's Brandenburg Concertos to Beethoven's famous Allegretto movement from the 7th Symphony and from Mozart's overture to Figaro's Wedding to Richter's Vivaldi adaptation "The Four Seasons Recomposed," and much more. The concertmasters conduct and host the evening! Friday, March 8th, at 6 pm in the Concert Hall.
Harpischord Concerto at full volume
Górecki’s Harpsichord Concerto lasts only nine minutes but is a relentlessly gripping onslaught that seems far more substantial. Remember to breathe! The brilliant Irina Zahharenkova arrives as the soloist. The evening concludes with Sibelius's beloved second symphony, whose brightness convinces with its hopefulness. Classical at City Hall
This string quintet matinee is exciting yet classical and dignified at the same time. A sense of history is palpable at the Old City Hall. Brahms's quintet constructs harmonies and melodies richly romantic. Mozart's quintet is calm, beautiful, and floats above the everyday. Sunday, March 24th, at 3 pm in the Old City Hall.
Easter Oratorio on Good Friday
This Good Friday concert presents Pekka Kostiainen’s well-received Easter oratorio Triduum paschale.Opening with a dramatic service for Maundy Thursday, it continues with a sombre Service of the Word for Good Friday and concludes with a jubilant Easter Sunday Mass. The oratorio is given a handsome performance by Ville Matvejeff and a raft of distinguished soloists. Friday, March 29th, at 6 pm in the Turku Cathedral.
Salon by Juhis
Juha-Pekka Vikman, familiarly known as Juhis, is the long-serving Leader of the Turku Philharmonic and much appreciated by Turku audiences and has designed the program for a chamber music afternoon. Alfred Schnittke's, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's, and Dmitri Shostakovich's masterpieces are performed in the atmospheric setting of Turku Castle on Sunday, April 7th, at 3 pm.
Storm Spell
Tüür's impressive work "Storm spell" takes the listener to new musical landscapes. Mishka Rushdie Momen, one of the most interesting new British pianists, reveals the core of the pieces and interprets Mozart's A major concerto. Finally, Dvořák's 9th symphony reflects the wonders of North America, the New World, in its tones. Thursday, April 11th, at 7 pm and Friday, April 12th, at 6 pm in the Concert Hall.
Superstar of theremin Carolina Eyck
Carolina Eyck, superstar of the magical theremin, arrives in Turku. Kalevi Aho's concerto dedicated to Eyck draws inspiration from Lapland's mystical eight seasons. The concert, led by Principal Guest Conductor Christian Kluxen, is perfect for music enthusiasts with an adventurous spirit, and includes music by Messiaen and Bartók. Thursday, April 18th, at 7 pm in the Concert Hall.
