Internationally acknowledged Finnish guitarist Patrik Kleemola performs as a soloist at the Turku Philharmonic Orchestra’s Chitarra d’amore concert Fri. 6th Oct. at 7 pm at the Concert Hall. Programme includes romantic tones by Italian composers from various centuries. Alessandro de Marchi conducts and the concert is part of the Turku Guitar Festival. New Tasty Tones series starts with the concert where delicacies are savoured from composers’ plates. Introduction to delicacies by music scholar, PhD Susanna Välimäki. Curious explorers series also starts on Fri. 6th Oct.

 

The first Tasty Tones series introduces us to dietary habits of Italian composers. The three-part menu served at the upper lobby consists of beetroot and ham in the way of Apicius, Ravioli alla Paganini, orange pudding and minty orange salad. Tasty Tones participants meet at the upper lobby of the Concert Hall before the evening’s concert at 5.30 pm. Tickets are available from Ars Musica (Aninkaistenkatu 9, Mon-Fri 11am-5pm and during the events) and also via Concert House phone service (Mon-Fri 9am-3pm, phone (02) 262 0333). 

 

The concert opens with Otto Respighi’s Romantic ‘Botticelli Triptych’, where the composer depicts famous paintings such as The Birth of Venus. A similarly Romantic mood may be found in the Concerto for Strings by Nino Rota, best known as a film composer, and the mood piece Notturno by Giuseppe Martucci. Guitarist Patrik Kleemola appears as a soloist in the melodic Guitar Concerto of Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco.  Respighi’s Ancient Airs and Dances Suite No. 3 is based on lute tunes from the 16th and 17th centuries.

 

One of the most sought after conductors, Alessandro de Marchi’s repertoire reaches from early baroque music via Mozart and Haydn to late bel canto works. Lately he has often performed with Academia Montis Regalis which he founded. Since 2010 De Marchi has worked as an artistic director of the Innsbruck Festival of Early Music.

 

Patrik Kleemola, an internationally acknowledged Finnish guitar player has performed as a soloist on several important music festivals around the world. Kleemola is also known for his active co-work with composers. While being an active performer, he also teaches guitar and works as the artistic director for Turku Guitar Festival.

Polish soprano Joanna Kozłowska comes to perform Henryk Górecki’s Symphony No. 3 ”Symphony of Sorrowful Songs” with the Turku Philharmonic Orchestra. One of the world’s most impressive pieces will be heard at the Sorrowful song concerts on Thu and Fri 28th-29th of September at the Turku Concert Hall. Setting the mood is one of Jean Sibelius’s last works, ‘A lonely ski trail’ recited by Ralf Långbacka. The concert is a co-work with Turku University of Applied Science´s Arts Academy and The Academy of Music in Gdansk. Students of the schools are accompanying the strings on Górecki’s Symphony of Sorrowful Songs and getting to know professional orchestra’s work.

Our autumn novelty series is an essay in taste! What did Berlioz eat while writing his Symphonie fantastique? What would you have found on the plates of Italian composers? And which foods did Sibelius enjoy? Music scholar Susanna Välimäki explores composers’ culinary preferences at a talk before each concert in the series, with a chance to sample delicacies related to the night’s programme.

 

Series includes four concerts during the Autumn season 2017 and tasting menus with introductions by Susanna Välimäki.

Turku Concert Hall is a place of true and false in Thu 21st of september at 7 pm. Turku Philharmonic Orchestra performs Uljas Pulkkis´ piece Knowledge of nature, concert for cello, soprano and orchestra. In the concert True or false? we will also hear Einojuhani Rautavaara´s True and false unicorn as well as Jean Sibelius´ Pelléas et Melisande Suite. Jan Söderblom conducts the orchestra and soloists are soprano Tiina-Maija Koskela and cellist Roi Ruottinen as well as chamber choir Key Ensemble. The concert is a part of the jubilee of Muusikkojen liitto and Gramex.

Musicians of Turku Philharmonic Orchestra perform four chamber music concerts during autumn 2017. Mobile sat 23rd of september at 7 pm in Wäino Aaltonen Museum of Art, Myths and legends sat 21st of october at 3 pm in Hus Lindman, Masquerade sun 12th of november at 2 and 4 pm in Donner-institute and Caleidoscope sun 10th of december at 3 pm in Turku Castle. Members of the orchestra perform varied repertoire from across the history of music and from diffrerent genres. In autumns first chamber music concert we will hear Bernhard Henrik Crusell´s divertimento in C major, Tōru Takemitsu´s Entre-temps, Samuel Barber´s Adagio and Philip Glass´String Quartet no. 3. Takuya Takashima, oboe, Ilana Gothóni and Qi Li, violin, Jasmine Beams, viola and Lauri Krapu, cello perform in the concert. The concert is sold out.

Turun filharmoninen orkesteri konsertoi Pietarin Mariinsky Concert Hallissa perjantaina 15.9. Konsertissa kuullaan Syysaurinko-konsertin ohjelma ylikapellimestari Leif Segerstamin johtamana. Konsertti on osa Suomi100-juhlallisuuksia.

Turun filharmoninen orkesteri on vuodesta 2013 alkaen vieraillut vuosittain Pietarin Mariinsky Concert Hallissa. Pietariin viedään kerran syksyssä ylikapellimestari Leif Segerstamin johtama konsertti, joka kuullaan myös Turussa. Konserttivierailut ovat osa TFO:n ja maineikkaan Mariinski-teatterin orkesterin yhteistyötä. Vierailuyhteistyö myös vahvistaa Turun ja Pietarin yli 60-vuotista ystävyyskaupunkisuhdetta.

The Turku Culture Card provides you access to the dress rehearsals of the Turku Philharmonic free of charge!

The rehearsals may vary in duration; generally, at a dress rehearsal the programme of the evening´s concert is played straight through in the order of performance. However, depending on the conductor and the repertoire, a dress rehearsal may also involve rehearsing certain movements or certain instrument sections; also, some of the evening´s program may be omitted or performed in a cursory manner.

Dress rehearsals are held at Turku Concert Hall, Aninkaistenkatu 9, unless otherwise specified. The front doors are opened at about 10.30, but acces to the hall is only allowed a few minutes before the rehearsal begins. The café is not open during dress rehearsals.

Turku Philharmonic Orchestra´s autumns season begins on Thu 7th and Fri 8th September in the Concert Hall at 7 pm with a comprehensive program of finnish music. Between Klami and Sibelius we will hear two of Beethoven arias interpreted by soprano Reetta Haavisto.  Chief Conductor Leif Segerstam conducts the philharmonics. This programme will also be performed at the Mariinsky Concert Hall in St Petersburg as part of the celebrations of the centenary of Finland’s independence.

 

Uuno Klamis Kalevala Suite is full of epicness and primitivity spiced with modernism. Ludwig van Beethoven´s arias Primo amore and Ah, perfido! burst with the joy of first love and the miserability of being betrayed. The concert ends with Jean Sibelius´ 5th symphony that is filled with cosmic and nature-related themes and is one of the composers most famous works. 

 

Soprano Reetta Haavisto has had success in various lied-competitions. In addition she has sung many opera roles and has performed diversily with many orchestras.

 

Chief Conductor Leif Segerstam is one of the world´s most famous conductors. He composes, records and leads orchestras busily. Segerstam has composed over 300 symphonies.
