Argentine and French elegance transport the audience into a world of tango and refined timbres. Ariel Pirotti’s Tangoide combines the nostalgia of Buenos Aires with gentle rhythms. Osvaldo Golijov’s Fish Tale is a dreamlike, beautiful and surreal depiction of a fish’s story – the composer himself described his work as a ‘watercolour’. Works by contemporary composers are joined by classics by Maurice Ravel and Jean Françaix: Ravel’s piece was commissioned to showcase the virtuosic capabilities of instrument maker Érard’s new harp, whilst the clarinet quintet’s spirit of chamber-musical conviviality is like a depiction of a bustling Parisian café.
