Leila Josefowicz is one of the world’s best-known violinists and most sought-after soloists. She is a passionate advocate of contemporary music and has worked with the leading orchestras and conductors of our time. Ligeti spent several years working on his Violin Concerto, completed in 1993, weaving into it a wide range of his techniques, ideas and references to different eras. A vast array of colourful details can also be found in the story of the Queen of Sheba. This ballet, centred on a biblical figure, is a spectacle that spares no expense in its opulence, exoticism or love. Sibelius, too, had no shortage of ideas – his Fifth Symphony required three versions before it was completed, one of which premiered in Turku. Swans and Finnish nature resonate throughout this luminous work.
