Eelis Malmivirta

Horn

Eelis Malmivirta began playing the French horn at the age of nine under the guidance of Timo Ronkainen at the West Helsinki Music Institute. In 2011, he was accepted into the Junior Department of the Sibelius Academy, where he continued his studies with Ronkainen. He pursued his professional music education abroad, completing his bachelor’s degree at the Hanover University of Music, Drama and Media in Germany under Professor Markus Maskuniitty from 2015 to 2020, and his master’s degree in Sweden at the Royal College of Music in Stockholm from 2020 to 2022, studying with Martin Schöpfer and Björn Olsson.

Since 2023, Malmivirta has been a member of the Turku Philharmonic Orchestra. He has also worked with the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra, the Swedish and Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestras, and the orchestra of the Royal Swedish Opera.

In addition to his orchestral work, Malmivirta is an active chamber musician. He is particularly passionate about brass and wind quintets. As a member of the wind quintet Earendel, he was a finalist in the Ung och Lovande (Young and Promising) competition in 2023, which led to numerous concert engagements and festival invitations across Sweden.

Outside of music, Malmivirta enjoys spending his free time either exercising or working on renovations of his over 100-year-old wooden house.
