Henna Jämsä

Clarinet

Henna Jämsä was born into a family of musicians in Central Ostrobothnia in 1977. Her older sisters played the flute and oboe, so she was assigned the clarinet in accordance with the musical score. Her older sister Anu still plays in front of her in the flute section of the Turku Philharmonic Orchestra.

Henna completed her professional studies at the Sibelius Academy under the guidance of Anna-Maija Korsimaa and Harri Mäki. She graduated with a Master’s degree in music in 2003. In addition to the Academy, she has studied at the Royal College of Music in Stockholm and attended numerous master classes in Finland and abroad.

Henna Jämsä has played in the Turku Philharmonic Orchestra since 2002. She has also worked for longer periods with the Lapland Chamber Orchestra, the Oulu Sinfonia, Helsinki City Orchestra and Sinfonia Lahti. As a temporary session musician, she has been seen in most of Finland’s professional orchestras and numerous session ensembles. She has also played at many summer festivals and theater productions and taught at the Sibelius Academy, the Turku Academy of Arts, and summer courses.

To mark her 20-year career as a musician, Henna took a break to study at a horticultural school and qualified as a gardener in 2020. She works part-time as a gardener, particularly during the orchestra’s summer break. Her great passions include all kinds of edible plants, from garlic to walnuts, and self-sufficiency in home gardens.
