Easter Concert: St Matthew Passion

On Good Friday, 11 April 1727, St Thomas’s Church in Leipzig fell silent for the Easter service as the St Matthew Passion by the church’s cantor, J. S. Bach, was performed for the very first time. In 2027, the St Matthew Passion will celebrate its 300th anniversary and will once again be performed on Good Friday in concert halls and churches around the world. The Passion depicts the events of the Easter period, suffering and death, but also hope and consolation. This monumental work, lasting over three hours, recounts the final days of Jesus’ life and concludes with the moving final chorus ‘Wir setzen uns mit Tränen nieder’ (‘We sit down in tears’). This landmark performance celebrates Fuuga’s first Easter together with top soloists and the Turku-based choir CCA. The work is conducted by the American harpsichordist and conductor Jeannette Sorrell.
