Based on Niillas Holmberg’s best-selling novel Halla Helle (2021), Outi Tarkiainen’s opera Yön päivä tells the story of Áile, a visual artist who balances her international career with her Sámi identity. The opera will premiere in Essen in February, with the Finnish premiere taking place at the Finnish National Opera in October 2027. In the song cycle based on the opera, which will be premiered under the baton of John Storgårds, a joiker and a soprano engage in dialogue. The meeting of two worlds is also explored in Dvořák’s hit symphony, in which the North American landscape – with its indigenous peoples, songs, myths and prairies – blends with Czech Romanticism. Severi Pyysalo’s work pays tribute to the jazz virtuoso, who passed away in the spring of 2026.
