The new symphony year begins with our Principal Guest Conductor Christian Kluxen and violinist Elina Vähälä. The waltz king Strauss Jr. leads us from the merriment of Viennese operetta to the beautiful whirls of the Danube. Korngold composed for both films and concert halls, and his violin concerto, echoing the golden age of Hollywood, pays homage to both. Rachmaninoff’s hypnotic Vocalise, originally composed for a high singing voice, is now heard in an interpretation for violin and orchestra. In Stravinsky’s hands, the mythological Firebird sounds fiercely explosive, culminating in an infernal dance and a festive finale.
