Christian Kluxen’s final concert as Principal Guest Conductor is an impressive collection of subtle, introverted, and serenely beautiful works by Britten, Lieberson, Ravel, and Sibelius. The four sea-themed interludes from the opera Peter Grimes depict the movements of the sea and coastal landscapes. The same purity and fresh lyricism can also be found in Sibelius’ Sixth Symphony. Lieberson composed five songs based on Pablo Neruda’s love poems for his spouse, and now mezzosoprano Rebecka Wallroth lends her voice to the songs. The ethereal Pavane for a Dead Princess ties the evening’s mood together.
